MYSTERY VALLEY RUIN

FALLEN SANDSTONE FORMS

IMAGES ON A SANDSTONE FACE

WRITINGS IN STONE

JUNIPER SILHOUETTE AND MITTEN ROCK

JUNIPER WINDOW AND YEI BI CHEI ROCKS

Red

The People truly live

in desert time

neighbors

with sediment

sandstone monuments, erosion

delicately binding

wind

water

heat

And how The People exist in beauty from

red sand mixture

the wind-fashioned landscape

like a giant reptile

soaking up hozhó

beauty in circumference

Like red sand nestling in rip-tidal wind

currents, like springtime roots clinging

to scent of water—

The People—the basis of memory

lie open, vulnerable at a distance and dense as

Anasazi riddles, playful as children laughing in

canyon depths

And their speech

ripens the center

of autumn fruit, churns torrents

of summer flash floods, fills arroyos—

Rejuvenates the earth

Try to decipher their tangled thoughts, vaporous

as clouds, subtle like changes of seasons, solid

as flat red rock layered into earth, and

stillness—the stillness as agent, a vessel of heat

permeating into

The sweet soundings:

a river

a wash

a car engine

echoing back and forth

across great expanse

beyond sedimentary giants

and far off into milky blue

sky, the ever-penetrating

language of red

How clinging red landscape hides

in the moon’s shadow

in the wind’s pull

How The People

lie in the belly

Such wonder
